Accessible Bathroom Renovations in Adelaide
Safe, dignified, beautifully designed bathrooms for anyone who needs them. NDIS-compatible modifications from a licensed builder.
Our Approach to Accessibility Bathroom in Adelaide
Accessible bathroom design is more nuanced than adding a grab rail and calling it done. A bathroom that genuinely supports independence and safety requires careful planning — of floor falls for drainage without trip hazards, of grab rail positions that actually correspond to how someone gets in and out of the shower, of door widths that accommodate aids without feeling institutional, and of non-slip finishes that are specified to the right slip resistance rating.
At Barco Build, we design and build accessible bathrooms to AS 1428.1 (Design for Access and Mobility) and work with NDIS participants, their occupational therapists, and their families to deliver bathrooms that meet compliance requirements without looking like hospital fittings. This distinction matters to most of our clients — they want a bathroom that looks like a premium home renovation, not a medical facility.
We collaborate with occupational therapists throughout Adelaide who can assess a client's specific needs and produce a written brief that we then design and quote from. If your OT has already prepared a report with specific requirements, we can work directly from that document. If you're looking for an OT referral, we can recommend practitioners we've worked with across the greater Adelaide area.
For NDIS participants, we understand the Capital Supports (Home Modifications) funding pathway and can provide quotes in the format required by plan managers, as well as completion documentation for claims. We've worked with NDIS participants in Glenelg, Norwood, Burnside, and many other Adelaide suburbs on modifications ranging from single grab rail installations to complete bathroom rebuilds.
Ageing-in-place modifications — for homeowners wanting to future-proof their bathroom before mobility changes become unavoidable — are a growing part of our work. A well-planned accessible bathroom renovation is something to be proud of, not to apologise for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. We work with NDIS participants and their plan managers for bathroom modifications funded under Capital Supports (Home Modifications). We can work from an Occupational Therapist's report, provide written quotes in the format your plan manager needs, and supply completion documentation for claims. A curbless shower (also called a walk-in or level-access shower) has no step or hob at the entry. The floor is set on a continuous fall toward the drain, so water runs away cleanly without needing a barrier. This eliminates a major trip hazard for older people and makes the shower accessible for wheelchair users. It also looks sleek in a modern renovation — many clients choose it purely for aesthetic reasons.
Absolutely not. Modern grab rails are available in matte black, brushed nickel, and chrome — the same finishes as your tapware. Installed at the right height and position by a licensed builder into proper structural backing, they're a design feature, not a stigma. We work hard to ensure accessibility modifications enhance rather than compromise the look of your bathroom.
To safely support the forces a grab rail must resist (a person's full body weight), rails must be fixed into either structural studs or purpose-installed backing boards within the wall. During renovation, we install backing at all planned grab rail locations as a matter of course, even if rails aren't fitted immediately — this makes future installation easy and safe. Grab rails should never be fixed only to tile or plasterboard.
Not always. If you're self-funding the renovation and simply want a safer bathroom, we can design and build to accessibility standards without a formal OT report. However, if the renovation is being funded through NDIS, most plan managers will require an OT assessment and recommendation before approving funding. We can connect you with OTs we've worked with in Adelaide if you need a referral.
Absolutely — and this is a priority in everything we design. Curbless showers look sleek and contemporary. Modern grab rails in matte black or brushed nickel are indistinguishable from standard towel rails. Non-slip tiles are available in every format and aesthetic. Wider doorways can be handled with stylish cavity sliders. An accessible bathroom designed well looks like a luxury renovation that also happens to be safe — not a compromise.
